Tehiyah is a Jewish community day school committed to serving a diverse student body, maintaining academic excellence, and instilling in its students a love of learning, respect for individual differences, and a deep appreciation of Jewish values and culture
Tehiyah provides a student-friendly balance of theoretical and practical skills, coupled with social, real-world experiences. Teaching and learning at Tehiyah is a collaborative effort. Our students are encouraged to be proactive learners; as part of the learning process they regularly engage in self-reflection and self-assessment. Enthusiasm, joy of learning, and integration of heart and mind are what sets Tehiyah apart.
Our thriving and highly regarded middle school provides an important transition between the elementary grades and high school for students already enrolled at Tehiyah and for new students, as well. With individual classes for each subject area, students are expected to take more responsibility for organizing and completing course work. They also enjoy a special closeness fostered in this “school-within-a-school,” where they may choose to participate in the student council, the middle school play, junior varsity and varsity sports, yearbook, and a host of service learning projects.
Hebrew & Judaic Studies
Judaism shapes Tehiyah’s calendar and resonates throughout our school with meaning and warmth. We take delight in our celebrations of Shabbat and the festivals of the Jewish year. At the same time, we recognize that many threads contribute to the rich tapestry of Jewish tradition, and seek to convey the breadth, beauty, diversity, and resilience of that tradition.
Hebrew has been the language of the Jewish people from ancient times to the present. Kindergartners are introduced to Hebrew conversation, blessings, songs, and vocabulary. In subsequent grades, students continue to expand their skills to increase verbal fluency, reading comprehension, writing ability, and familiarity with prayers and rituals.
“Creation, we are taught,” states Abraham Joshua Heschel, “is not an act that happened once upon a time. The act of bringing the world into existence is a continuous process.”
Through the arts, we involve ourselves in the process of creation. From their earliest days at Tehiyah, our students learn to appreciate many forms of art and to experience the joy of creating through drawing, painting, ceramics, music, dance, and drama, to name a few.
As citizens of our community and of the world, we try to practice the Jewish values central to our school philosophy by performing the mitzvah of tikkun olam, or working to repair and restore the world. We ask each family to contribute time each year to numerous tasks and projects around the school, while students at all levels participate in annual drives, organized by our middle school student council, to collect food, clothing, books, etc.
Tehiyah’s fully equipped computer laboratory provides our students an opportunity to hone their skills in typing, word processing, basic spreadsheet use, researching on the internet, web design, and a variety of creative multimedia applications including sophisticated graphic design and video software applications. In addition to Computer Science instruction, students also receive regular reinforcement of computer skills through research and multimedia assignments from teachers across both the General Studies and Judaic Studies curricula.
In the Tehiyah Day School library the “People of the Book” celebrate the power of stories to stretch hearts and minds. At the same time students learn the information literacy tools they will need to acquire, analyze, prioritize, synthesize and evaluate information. In the Information Age such skills are at least as important as the facts they learn.
P.E. & Athletics
Tehiyah's physical education program emphasizes fitness, participation, and cooperative play over competition. We provide age-appropriate activities, lead-up games, and sports, which promote and develop movement skills, positive self-image, and social skills, as they instill principles of safety and fair play.
Our afterschool athletic program offers students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to participate in flag football, soccer, basketball, and volleyball in a local, independent sports league. We emphasize team play and skills while supporting cooperation in an introductory, competitive atmosphere. Afterschool sports' activities for younger students are available as enrichment classes through the Tehiyah Afterschool Program (TAP).
Tehiyah Afterschool Program (TAP)
The Tehiyah After-school Program (TAP) is available for all children who attend Tehiyah Day School. TAP provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can play, relax, engage in homework, and enjoy a healthy/organic snack. The philosophy behind TAP is to provide a balance between structure and flexibility, and to foster self-esteem, confidence, creativity, humor, compassion, empathy, responsibility and initiative.
