As citizens of our community and of the world, we try to practice the Jewish values central to our school philosophy by performing the mitzvah of tikkun olam, or working to repair and restore the world. We ask each family to contribute time each year to numerous tasks and projects around the school, while students at all levels participate in annual drives, organized by our middle school student council, to collect food, clothing, books, etc. Schoolwide projects can also include activities like tree planting in a Bay Area watershed. In addition, middle school students participate in special projects such as tutoring, creek clean-up, etc., in the larger community. Seventh graders, many of whom are preparing privately to become b’nai mitzvah, spend an entire year learning and practicing the principle of tzedakah, or charitable giving.
