Lane Smith usually works with Jon Scieszka, but he has now written a book on the Founding Fathers--as kids--called John, Paul, George and Ben. Yes, it is as funny as the rest of his books.
Kristen Kladstrup's The Book of Story Beginnings, is a wonderful new fantasy in which a boy reappears a hundred years after rowing off to sea in 1914--from Iowa!
For nonfiction readers, there is Chew on This: Everything You Don't Want to Know about Fast Food, by Eric Schlosser & Charles Wilson.
It's the kids' version of Fast Food Nation.

The Night of the Burning: Devorah's Story
by Linda Press Wulf
Written for children, it tells the story of Linda's mother-in-law, who, with her sister, were the only survivors of a pogrom in their Polish community between the two world wars. They were rescued from an orphanage by a South African philanthropist named Isaac Ochberg, and grew up in that country. The book is beautiful and sad, tender and terrifying. It gives voice to a history needing to be shared.

Beyond Anne Frank: Hidden Children and Postwar Families in Holland
by Diane L. Wolf
(will be available in January of 2007)
An adult book, this describes the lives of survivors who were hidden as children in Gentile homes in Holland--before, during and after World War II. Their experiences were very different from Anne Frank’s. Many describe their experience with, "My war began after the war."
Special events will celebrate both books and authors this year.
Dates and times to be announced.

Happy New Year!
Come see the new books we have ready to read in 2007!
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday come find some of the many biographies, fiction and nonfiction titles we have that describe the courageous fight for civil rights. One new title is Russell Freedman’s Freedom Walkers: The Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Rosa Park’s act of courage thrust a 26-year-old minister into leadership during that year-long struggle. Rev. M. L. King began his struggle for justice there. Freedman uses photos and exciting text to tell this compelling story.
