In the warm, nonjudgmental atmosphere of the first grade classroom, children develop confidence in themselves and in their ability to explore and learn. We believe that children need to feel valued, appreciated, and respected. They need to be given opportunities for active engagement in learning, and the chance to express their learning in a variety of ways. When we create this environment in our classroom, we see the children learn and grow in surprising and wonderful ways.
Language Arts
First grade is an exciting year for children as they start to gain confidence in their abilities to read and write. Using a wide range of materials and activities, our class provides a rich literacy experience that promotes both skills, and a love of reading and writing.
Math
As we cover the first grade Math curriculum, children are given the chance to discover mathematical concepts, to solve real problems, to explain their thinking, to consider alternative ways of thinking, to appreciate how mathematics can be used in everyday life and, most importantly, to establish a positive relationship to mathematics.
Science
Children's curiosity about, and enthusiasm for, the world around them make them natural scientists. Children learn to view their world scientifically when they are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers, collect things, count and measure things, observe closely, compare and contrast, and organize collections and information.
Social Science
In first grade the children's social, emotional, and moral development are the heart of the social science curriculum. We focus on the child's own experiences, feelings and social interactions. Children learn about empathy, impulse control and anger management throughout the year.
