Physical Education (P.E.)
Tehiyah’s physical education program emphasizes fitness, participation, and cooperative play. We offer age-appropriate activities, lead-up games, and sports to develop movement skills, positive self-image, and social skills, as we instill principles of safety and fair play. Our after-school athletic program offers students in grades 6-8 opportunities to participate in flag football, soccer, basketball, cross country, and volleyball in a local, independent sports league. While focusing on team play and skills, we foster cooperation in an introductory, competitive atmosphere. After-school sports activities for younger students are available as enrichment classes through the Tehiyah After-school Program (TAP).
Tehiyah Timber Wolves Athletics Program
Since 2000, the athletic program has been designed to promote opportunities of confidence building for all student athletes at all skill levels. The program fosters fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit, team building, and friendly competition. The ultimate goal of our program is for each student athlete to have fun while working together with the team to achieve a common goal.
The athletic program offers flag football and soccer in the fall. The winter term consists of girls’ and boys’ basketball (varsity and junior varsity levels), as well as cross country. Volleyball is offered in the spring.

Kim has been teaching at Tehiyah since 2002 as the Elementary P.E. teacher and M.S. Volleyball coach. She received her B.S. degree and teaching credential from Cal Poly State University in Physical Education, Health and Life Science, and a Masters degree in Exercise Science. She has been teaching Health Education and P.E. in both middle and high school since 1990. She has also headed Advising and Community Service programs for most of her teaching career. She was a Fitness Director of a family Health Club and an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer for ten years prior to teaching. Kim taught overseas in the American/International schools in Lima, Peru, and Warsaw, Poland. Locally she is a volunteer for “Challenge Day” whose vision is that “every child feels safe, loved and celebrated” and empowers students to “be the change” they want to see in their schools.
I believe in providing a positive environment where students are accepted for being themselves, and where mutual respect, cooperation, and independence are emphasized. Along with learning specific motor skills, sports and improving personal fitness, I believe successful students can learn valuable life-skills such as problem-solving and communication skills through cooperative and individual activities. As a role model of an active, healthy lifestyle, I motivate students to enjoy physical activity in their lives. I believe that everyone can participate in P.E. at his/her own level and gain self-confidence. My vision is that students will ultimately be empowered to be their best selves in everyday challenges by practicing responsibility, leadership and compassion for others while having fun in the process.
Melissa Abadia Physical Education Teacher
I missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. "
Michael Jordan
Melissa Abadia began her love for sports playing tennis and other games with her family growing up in Orinda. Melissa went on to play on sports teams in middle school, high school, college, and competitively through the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Besides sports, her other loves include her husband and three kids, and volunteering for the Boys Scout of America and the Special Olympics. At Tehiyah, she combines her passion for sports and for making a difference in children’s lives. Her teaching goal is to make P.E. class accessible to everyone, providing maximum activity while encouraging students to treat each other with honesty, sportsmanship and respect. Athletics is a fantastic way to teach young people life lessons in a safe environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process.
Melissa holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland and a M.B.A. Degree from Keller Graduate School of Management, and is completing her physical education teaching credential at California State East Bay University.
