Kindergarten Fun & Games! Spring

8 Sessions: March 31, April 7, 14, (no class April 21, 28), May 5, 12, 19 (no class May 26) June 2, 9.
Designed for both boys and girls who love to play games and be active! This class will be a combination of fun, modified lead-up games including basic skills in volleyball, baseball, hockey, tumbling, net-ball and various cooperative tag games. Emphasis is on cooperative play, individual challenge and having FUN! Wear sturdy shoes and proper attire for activity.

Creative Cooking with Kim

Location: Staff Kitchen. Kim will pick everyone up from TAP at the picnic tables.

Kim teaches more than just Fun and Games! An adventurer at heart, Kim decided to step in and get her hands messy in the kitchen this spring! Join her in the fun for a weekly kitchen adventure! Our class will provide a perfect laboratory for cooking-exploration in a safe place (where the mess is kept at school and out of your kitchen at home!). Cooking in a group not only provides wonderful opportunities and tools to promote positive social interactions and independence, but also ends with some very yummy treats*. Note: some recipes may repeat from Gillian’s past sessions due to popularity.
* We will create some snacks with a nutritional twist and some of the projects will include sweets/treats. Now where does Kim’s famous Broccoli Ice Cream fit in?? To both nutritional and sweet! If you haven’t tried it yet, you will get a chance to do so!

Mad Science : Light and Energy

Crazy Chemworks: Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works! Students will learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results. We will explore the pH extremes with our Reaction Tubes in what is sure-to-be a popping experience! Create slime using the Mad Science recipe, and then enter the Slime Olympics to test your polymers. Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology! We will melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice!
Instructor: Mr. Allen has worked for Mad Science for two years and has a BS from UC Berkeley. He is returning this session again offering you loads of fun, scientific discovery and lessons of a lifetime in scientific exploration. Choose from a variety of quality beads and charms to make necklaces, bracelets or anklets for yourself or as gifts for others. Guided instruction with patterns to follow are available, as well as opportunities to express your individual creativity.

Get a group of your friends to sign up together for a fun experience! This class will be a combination of fun lead-up games and skills including soccer, baseball, volleyball, hockey, recreational games and lacrosse. The focus will be on cooperative play, individual challenge, skill development and strategies. The group will help choose favorite activities & games. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a healthy snack.

Using hand drums, we will learn to create various tones and dynamics while learning basic rhythm patterns. Once coordination and confidence are established, we will build song structure of rhythmic phrasing, soloing, and grooving in unison.
*Teacher: Katja Cooper has taught and performed for 20 years in Israel, Europe and the U.S.. Her musical knowledge, experience, and eclectic drumming styles are utilized for all occasions and all ages. Her last project involved BJE-Israel in the Gardens 2006. After learning technique of each different hand drum, strong basics of African and Middle Eastern rhythms are incorporated in ensemble style drumming. Class Limit: 6-12 Note: Preference will be given to those who have not taken the class before.
Location: Tassajara Park Ceramic Studio- Chris will meet the students in Tap and walk them over and back to the studio. Parents may pick-up at the studio.

We will make many different and wonderful things out of clay. Students can create a cup, a wind-chime, an animal, a miniature scene, or something from your imagination! Students can explore many options. Work will be fired and glazed using colorful and SAFE glazes so that the projects you take home are both usable and decorative. Teacher will gear projects with a mind to age/skill levels--thus older students may want to explore projects of more complexity with help on an individual basis.
Instructor: Chris Lack is a ceramic artist and a practicing landscape contractor with a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from San Francisco State University. He has developed an ongoing pottery program at Kensington After School Enrichment Program and has run classes for adults in ceramics through the City of El Cerrito at the Tassajara clubhouse for several years. Spring is here and the time is ripe to begin new things and explore new passions. Students may explore their passion for music by learning the guitar using the Kenan method, which will have you playing songs in no time. In addition, the guitars will be provided, as well as a fun curriculum of rock and roll and folk style guitar.

This drum class inspires students and turns them into enthusiastic drummers! Beginners should meet with Mr. Thorne first class to have their skills assessed.
