Joining Tehiyah in 2015, Debra has demonstrated experience as a collaborative and inspiring leader, a passion for innovative education, and a deep commitment to expanding the depth and breadth of Tehiyah’s curriculum by honoring its roots and renewing it for the exciting future ahead.
In her prior work as Director of Education at Congregation Beth El in Berkeley, Debra transformed the school over her six year tenure by increasing enrollment from 150 to the current 230 students, while also engaging families in creative and dynamic Jewish community experiences. At Beth El, she mentored and developed a teaching team of over 30 faculty, cultivating trusting and supportive relationships.
As a result of her work, she was awarded the 2014 Shomrei Hakabbalah Award for Exemplary Contributions to Jewish Education by the Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation of the East Bay. In 2013, Debra was accepted into the prestigious Mandel Teacher Educators Institute which is a 2-year program focusing on innovative practices of professional development.
Debra has been an active member of the Bay Area Jewish community for years and, as a Tehiyah parent, greatly values and celebrates the wide diversity of East Bay Jewish families and has taught pre-K through 7th grade at a variety of Bay Area and California schools. Debra holds a Bachelor of Arts in American History from the University of California, San Diego and Master of Arts degrees from Hebrew Union College in Jewish Education and Jewish Non-Profit Management. She and her husband, Oren, live in El Cerrito and have two children who attend Tehiyah.
