Kol Tehiyah - 2017-18 Year in Review

A Message from the Interim Head of School

Dear Parents,

The 2018-19 school year was very busy and full of new ideas, initiatives and changes at Tehiyah. Linda Riff, served as our Interim Head of School from July through April, and I stepped in at the end of April with Linda’s departure. I am humbled and honored to serve in this capacity after previously serving as the Assistant Head of School/ Director of Academic Excellence.

  • Writer’s Workshop launched in all grades BK-8th. Students across all grade levels found their writer’s voice. Students kept writer’s notebooks, completed many pieces and had writing celebrations throughout the year. 5th grade writers even had their literary essays on A Wrinkle in Time displayed at the movie theater in El Cerrito! In April we celebrated Poetry Month and National Poem in Your Pocket Day with poetry readings, poetry gifts and by plastering poetry around the school.
  • Students organized a student-led walk out to stand up for safer schools and national gun reform laws. Students experienced the power of their words and an introduction to the democratic process.
  • Day and overnight field trips introduced students to new experiences, friends and countries. Overnight trips included Wolf Camp, Hangtown at Tawonga, the Marin Headlands, Santa Cruz Science School, Yosemite, and Israel.
  • Jewish values and identity were developed and nurtured through torah study, Hebrew, studying the midot of the month and ceremonies such as Haggigat Ha Torah (K), Haggigat Ha Siddur (2nd), and Haggigat ha Tanach (5th).
  • Project- Based Learning was introduced this year. In the elementary grades this was woven into the curriculum through hands-on, interdisciplinary projects such as the 1st grade city and the books that were written, published and bound in 5th grade. In Middle School, students in all classes joined PBL focus groups throughout the year, which culminated last week with an incredible production of Alice in Wonderland.
  • The Schlanger Thinker Lab opened this year! This new space and class was used for countless projects including building props for the play, making soap by hand, building robots and creating rockets.
  • Professional Development was prioritized across all disciplines. The JS faculty began their work with the Legacy Heritage Instructional Leadership Institute and had coaching and curriculum development all year long. All faculty participated in workshops with the Responsive Classroom, Toolbox & Writer’s Workshop.
  • The science curriculum was completely revised and revamped in all grades by our talented science specialists, Onna and Helaine, to align with the NGSS.
  • We connected with our own Tehiyah community with many family celebrations such as: Sukkot, Hannukah, Havdallah on the Hill, seders at Pesach, the Purim carnival and Shavuot.
  • Students also connected with each other through: modeh ani, buddies, daily morning meetings, assemblies, sharedcelebrations, field trips, and increased recess time.
  • We connected with the larger community through service projects such as Reading Buddies with Mira Vista School, and learning about the neighborhood by visiting local restaurants, fire stations and post offices and museums.
  • We connected with the environment by taking hikes, visiting parks, gardens, lakes and farms, working in our garden, releasing trout into reservoirs, cleaning up the Berkeley marina and raising monarch butterflies.

Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you in August!

2017-18 Honor Roll - Thank you to Our Generous Donors

Amazed. Inspired. and Grateful. Those are the words that come to mind when thinking of our annual Giving100% Challenge. Kicked off on GivingTuesday, our Tehiyah community broke every giving record and reached 100% participation by families, staff and our board of trustees within three days. We are so proud of our incredible community - families, alumni, trustees, friends, relatives and the greater community - and their clear commitment to Tehiyah!
